But wait!  There’s more!  We also do …

Advocacy & Public Policy

Did you know Cal Voices is the oldest peer-run consumer advocacy agency in Northern California?  Established in 1946, we’ve been around for nearly 70 years and focus our efforts on advocating for the interests of public mental health consumers and increasing the accessibility, quality, and affordability of mental health care.  We have played an integral role in helping to pass important California mental health legislation, including:

  • [2004] The Mental Health Services Act (Prop 63), a 1% tax on all incomes over $1 million to fund local and statewide mental health services

  • [2010] SB-543, which permits minors aged 12 and older to consent to outpatient mental health treatment or counseling services without first obtaining parental permission

  • [2012] SB-1172, which prohibits mental health professionals from practicing so-called “conversion” or “reparative” therapies that seek to change an individual’s sexual orientation when treating minors
